Stunning Inlaid Center Table
|
Description: A rare Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian library table signed "G. Herter" in two places (see photos). We had a gold tooled leather installed in the top writing surface. The front of the desk has three drawers whereas the back of the desk looks the same but has a drawer on each side but not in the center (see photo). We have three old keys for the drawers. One works the locks while the other two can be used to open the drawers. One drawer was missing the lock and we had the missing area filled with a piece of wood. This substantial table is tastefully decorated with extensive applied rosettes, finials, and other carvings as well as raised burled panels and columns. There is a solid center stretcher with carvings and a flat portion in the center. Born in 1830, Gustave was the oldest of the Herter Brothers. They are recognized as the premier furniture makers of the late Victorian period having designed pieces for the White House, Thurlow Lodge, Ruggles S. Morse mansion, and the Vanderbilt residence on Fifth Ave, NYC. We seldom find pieces signed by Herter. We are excited to be offering this truly rare piece!
